Many renters find a rental business on a phone, often while they're already planning the trip — and many give up before booking. The causes are rarely mysterious: a page that loads slowly on mobile data, a book button buried under paragraphs, a date picker that needs three attempts, a form that won't autofill. Each one is fixable, and fixing them usually does more for bookings than any redesign.

Where Phone Renters Drop Off

  • Landing — a slow first load on mobile data, or a pop-up covering the page
  • Browsing — a fleet that's hard to scroll, filter, or compare on a narrow screen
  • Choosing dates — a calendar that's too small to tap accurately, or that resets
  • Filling in details — too many fields, the wrong keyboard, no autofill
  • Paying — a booking step that opens a new tab, looks like a different site, or doesn't fit the screen

Design the Phone Layout First

A layout designed on a laptop and squeezed onto a phone almost always buries the most important thing. Start from the phone: what a renter sees on the first screen, and how far they have to scroll to act. Our car rental website design guide covers the page structure; on mobile, the priorities are tighter.

  • One clear action on the first screen — check dates or see available cars
  • A book or check-availability button that stays within thumb reach while scrolling
  • Buttons and links large enough to tap without zooming, with space between them
  • Text that's readable without pinching, and no content wider than the screen

  • Total, including deposit, before payment
  • Book button pinned within thumb reach

Speed Is a Mobile Feature

  • Resize and compress vehicle photos, and serve modern formats where supported
  • Load images below the first screen only as the renter scrolls to them
  • Remove scripts and plugins the site doesn't need — every extra one slows the first load
  • Test on a real phone over mobile data, not office Wi-Fi

Dates and Forms

The date picker is where many rental bookings stall. It should show a full month with tap-friendly days, make unavailable dates obvious, and keep the chosen dates if the renter goes back a step. Forms should ask only for what the booking needs, in the right format:

  • Phone fields that open the number keypad and email fields that open the email keyboard
  • Autofill support, so a renter's name, email, and address fill in with one tap
  • Inline error messages next to the field, not a wall of red text at the top
  • License upload by camera, with clear guidance on taking a readable photo

Payment on a Phone

Typing a card number on a phone is the moment renters are most likely to give up. Where your processor and booking platform support them, wallet payments like Apple Pay and Google Pay remove most of that typing. Show the full total, including the deposit, before the payment step, and keep the whole flow inside your site's design — a sudden switch to a page that looks different is where mobile renters lose trust. Our guide to Wheelbase Pro website integration covers keeping the booking embedded.

After the Booking

  • A confirmation screen that says exactly what happens next — pickup time, location, and what to bring
  • A confirmation email or text the renter can find again at pickup
  • Tap-to-call and tap-for-directions links that work on any phone

Phone-Specific Bugs Worth Checking For

  • The on-screen keyboard covering the field being typed into, or the continue button
  • A sticky header or chat bubble sitting on top of the book button
  • Date fields that behave differently on iPhone and Android, or that zoom the page when tapped
  • Text inputs with small font sizes, which make some phones zoom in and lose the layout
  • An embedded booking step that doesn't resize, leaving content cut off or scrolling sideways
  • Pop-ups or cookie banners that can't be closed on a small screen

None of these show up when testing on a laptop with the browser window narrowed — they appear only on real devices, which is why the test below matters.

Measuring Mobile Conversion

Fixing the phone experience is easier when you can see where it fails. In Google Analytics 4, compare visitors by device category for three numbers: how many reach a vehicle page, how many start a booking, and how many complete one. A healthy site loses some visitors at each step on every device; a phone problem shows up as a much steeper drop on mobile at one particular step. That step is where to look first.

  • Mark a confirmed booking as a key event, so GA4 counts real reservations rather than button clicks
  • Check the device report monthly, and again after any change to the booking flow
  • Look at the pages phone visitors leave from most — a slow or confusing page usually stands out

Test It Like a Renter

Before launch, and after any change, complete a real booking on at least one iPhone in Safari and one Android phone in Chrome, over mobile data. Then check your analytics: if phone visitors start bookings at a similar rate to desktop visitors but finish far fewer, the problem is in the booking flow; if they rarely start, it's in the pages before it. Our rental website launch checklist includes this test.

Every website we build is designed phone-first, with an embedded Wheelbase Pro booking flow, and tested on real iPhone and Android devices before launch. See what's included on our services page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Usually slow pages, a hard-to-reach book button, a frustrating date picker, long forms without autofill, or a payment step that breaks or looks like a different site. Each is fixable, and fixing them often lifts bookings more than a redesign.

Design the phone layout first, keep one clear action on the first screen, make buttons easy to tap, compress images, use the right input types and autofill on forms, and keep the booking flow embedded in your site. Then test a real booking on iPhone and Android.

If your processor and booking platform support them, they can reduce mobile checkout friction considerably, because renters don't have to type card details on a small screen. Check what your setup supports.

Compare phone and desktop visitors in your analytics. If phone visitors start bookings but finish far fewer, the booking flow is the problem; if they rarely start, the pages before it are. Testing a real booking on a phone usually shows the cause quickly.
